A circuit breaker is supposed to be one of the easiest things in your house to deal with. It seems so simple – just flip it and all is well again. But more often than not, people are told to just reset the breaker when it trips. They are not being told the whole truth. The breaker will continue to trip until the problem is found and fixed. Sometimes that problem can be rather simple to fix. Other times, not so much. Either way, understanding why your circuit breaker trips in the first place is key to determining what to do next.

An electrician can help to find the cause of your circuit breaker tripping frequently. A circuit breaker is a device that is used in homes to protect electrical wiring from damage caused by excessive current. If your circuit breaker is tripping for no apparent reason it is generally because there is a problem that needs to be solved. The first step is to find the reason why your circuit breaker is tripping in the first place.

An overloaded circuit or a short circuit are the two most common reasons that a circuit breaker will trip. Overloaded circuits can happen when to many high current draw appliances are hooked up to a single circuit. The most common being appliances in the kitchen, home office, or the media room. The residential wiring in homes is usually wired for 15 amps or 20 amps for normal use. If to many appliances are hooked up to a single circuit it can cause the circuit to be overloaded. This can be fixed by redistributing the current load to other circuits as needed. Sometimes even a new dedicated circuit will be needed to correct an overloaded circuit. These repairs should only be performed by a licensed electrician.

A short circuit causes a circuit breaker to trip for a more serious reason. The reason being is that a short circuit is capable of causing severe damage in a very short amount of time. The typical cause of a short circuit is a hot wire coming into contact with a neutral or ground wire. The location of a short can occur within an appliance, at the point of an outlet or switch, or within the home’s wiring itself. A short can also cause a burning odor to be detected and could also produce scorch marks. In extreme cases, a short can also cause a loud popping sound when the breaker does trip.

Ground faults are very similar to short circuits. Instead of a hot wire coming into contact with a neutral wire, a hot wire makes contact with a ground wire or a grounded surface such as a metal box or appliance. These types of problems are found on GFCI protected outlets and occur when there is water coming into contact with a wire or the outlets.

There are instances when a circuit breaker fails to function properly. The mechanical components in a breaker can deteriorate with time, causing the breaker to malfunction. This can cause the breaker to trip for reasons unrelated to electrical overload. For example, the breaker could begin to trip at very light loads. In such instances, the breaker may even become warm to the touch. The breaker may also develop visible signs of physical deterioration. It is recommended that faulty breakers be replaced to prevent electrical shock or fire.

For homeowners going through the restoration of homes in Sanford’s older historic neighborhoods such as the historic downtown Sanford district, they are finding out about a variety of electrical problems that had been present for years and had gone undetected. Homes with original wiring and electrical panels can present many electrical problems. Many of these problems can be attributed to the fact that homes of older vintage were constructed to operate under a much lower amount of electricity than homes of today require. When a circuit in these older homes is required to perform under additional loads of electricity, it can cause the breaker to trip.

If your circuit breaker is tripping it needs to be fixed. Even if you think it is for a small reason, it can cause your wiring to overheat which can lead to a fire. Most repairs take a few minutes to an hour to complete. The electrician will send someone to your home and use a multimeter to read the amps on the circuit in question to see where the problem is. He will then be able to tell you why your breaker is tripping and give you a quote for the repair before he starts.
