Why AFCI Protection Matters for Family Safety

Most homeowners in Deltona, DeBary, Lake Helen, Enterprise, and along the Saxon Boulevard corridor know about GFCI outlets — those receptacles with the test and reset buttons required in bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas. Fewer are familiar with AFCI protection, which guards against a different and equally dangerous type of electrical hazard. Understanding AFCI technology and where it's required can help you evaluate whether your home's wiring is as safe as it should be.

AFCI stands for Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter. An arc fault is a type of electrical discharge that occurs when current jumps across a gap in a damaged or degraded wire. Unlike an overload — which a standard circuit breaker is designed to catch — arc faults can occur at current levels that never trigger a conventional breaker, yet still generate enough heat to ignite surrounding materials.

Arc faults can develop in wiring that has been nicked by a nail or screw during home renovation, pinched by furniture, damaged by rodents, or simply deteriorated with age. They can also occur in the wiring inside appliances and power cords. The arcing itself generates temperatures exceeding 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit — hot enough to ignite wood, insulation, and drywall.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, electrical fires account for tens of thousands of residential fires annually. A significant portion of those fires originate from arc faults in situations where a conventional circuit breaker provided no protection at all. AFCI breakers are specifically designed to detect the unique electrical signature of an arc fault and trip before ignition can occur.

The National Electrical Code has progressively expanded AFCI requirements over successive editions. Current NEC standards require AFCI protection for nearly all living areas in new residential construction, including bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and even kitchens. Florida has adopted these requirements, meaning homes built to current code standards have this protection built in.

Older homes — those built before AFCI requirements were put in place — are not required to be retrofitted unless significant renovations trigger a code update. However, the absence of a code requirement doesn't mean the protection isn't valuable. Retrofitting AFCI breakers into an older home's panel is one of the most meaningful upgrades a homeowner can make from a fire prevention standpoint.

AFCI breakers look similar to standard breakers but include a test button and more sophisticated sensing electronics. They replace standard breakers in the panel and protect the entire circuit downstream. A licensed electrician can assess your current panel, determine which circuits would benefit most from AFCI protection, and install the appropriate breakers.
